Sunol Wilderness Backpacking

Writer: Sanaya GoelSanaya Goel

This backpacking outing was a memorable one for all the scouts and parents that attended it. We began on the morning of Saturday, 9/21/2024, at Chadbourne Elementary School. After conducting a gear check and weighing all the bags to ensure no one was carrying too much weight, we set off to the Sunol Regional Park. Once there, everyone prepared for the hike ahead, and we set off.

The first half of the hike was smooth, with hardly any change in elevation. However, as the hike progressed, it became more and more difficult. Many scouts’ bags were also ill fitting, further increasing the difficulty of the hike. By the time we reached our campsite, Stars Rest, we were exhausted. After a few minutes of rest, the cooks began cooking, and the rest of the scouts set up their tents. We all enjoyed a dinner of different varieties of pasta, biriyani, and many other

dehydrated delicacies. Once we had cleaned up and set up our tents, we sat back and enjoyed the breathtaking view of the sunset overlooking Mission Peak. After doing our business behind a bush, we settled in for the night.

In the morning, we repacked all our gear and prepared breakfast. As this was a backpacking outing, we had to carry all our trash, and gave it to those with the least in their packs. After a photoshoot on a tree stump and some climbing of trees, we set back down the trail. As the entire trail was downhill, we made it back to the parking lot in around half the time it took us to go up. Along the way, we were also keeping our eyes out for one of the scout’s Airpods, which had fallen from a pouch in her bag while we were hiking up.

At the end of this outing, all our legs ached, and we were all exhausted. However, we made memories and had an experience we would never forget. Even in our tiredness, we finished this backpacking trip with cheer.
