Early Life
John Alexander Logan or otherwise known as John A. Logan. John A. Logan was born on February 9th, 1826 in Murphysboro, Illinois. As a child, John studied with a private tutor and his father, and went to Shiloh college for three years. After college, John enlisted in the first Illinois infantry for the Mexican-American War. He went on to be the general in the Union army in the American Civil War.
Political Career
After his time in the army, John decided to study law. He graduated from the Law Department of the University of Louisville in 1851. He joined politics as a Democrat and served in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1853 to 1854, and 1857. In 1853, John A. Logan helped pass a law that to prohibit all African Americans from settling in Illinois.
Death
John A. Logan died on December 26th, 1886 in Washington D.C. He died from rheumatism.
