On March 19th, part of our troop went on the 10-mile hike. We started off our hike with high spirits and were able to finish the first 2 to 3 miles easily. After a while, it began raining, so we all put on our ponchos and rain gear and continued to hike. we started our hike on the Almaden Quicksilver County Park Mountain Bike Trail. The first part of the hike was steep and hilly, but we kept going. Luckily, it wasn’t much of a problem, as, after the steep beginning, the hike became easier. The rain continued throughout the hike, but it wasn’t much of an issue since it also cooled us down.
During the hike, we encountered a field of lavenders, and we took a snack break there. Throughout the hike, we saw many butterflies, and We encountered California newts many times throughout the entire hike. For a little bit of information about them, they are an orange-bellied newt found in the Western United States and can produce a toxin if felt threatened. In the middle of the hike, we also encountered some deer and some beautiful scenery on our hike.
Although our pace was slower due to the rain and there being more people on the hike, fewer breaks were needed than expected, and we even had an earlier lunch at around 10:30 A.M.
Despite the issues encountered during the hike, it was still a great learning experience. We enjoyed the beauty of the hike and had a wonderful time. Overall, the hike was a new experience and an excellent hike for the hiking merit badge.
Here’s a video recap of the hike:
