Our journey to Camp Wente began during a chilly morning on June 23, 2024. Once we met at Chadbourne, we conducted a gear check, ensuring that everyone had all the right supplies for a one week adventure in the woods. Everyone also handed in their envelopes, containing all the money needed to cover expenses during the trip. We then set off in a joyous mood, anticipating the days ahead.
After a two and a half hour drive, we stopped at the Recreational Grove Park in Willits, a mere 15 minutes away from camp, to eat lunch. All of us were in good spirits, and tried to imagine what it would be like at Wente. We then got back into our cars, and continued the drive.
As soon as we entered the camp, the adventure began. We had to hike up with our backpacks from the parking lot to a waiting area, where we saw our fellow troop member who was staffing. We then registered and hiked up to our campsite, which was on the crest of a hill. The steep climb left us all tired, but we had to hustle, as we had a swim test to complete.
The swim test, and all other water-based activities, was conducted in one of the most beautiful features of Wente, Lake Winawa. After taking a swim in the lake, we headed back up to our campsite to shower and prepare for a long week ahead. In the night, we attended the Opening Campfire, an enjoyable event with skits from the staff.
The week dragged on, but all of us had something to look forward to on Wednesday. The Wentathlon was a version of a pentathlon, with running, shooting, kayaking, archery, swimming, and other recreational activities. Our troop collaborated with another all girl troop, and although we did not finish the fastest, it was an experience worth remembering. The closing campfire on Friday was a blast. We performed “The Ugly Man,” a skit that everyone enjoyed. A Cooking MB group from our troop was also awarded a prize for being a wonderful team throughout the week.
We concluded our week strong, with memories made that will never be forgotten. Although several scouts were eager to return home, Camp Wente would be missed by all the scouts that had the pleasure of attending it.
