Before starting our Hiking Merit Badge, our troop went on a 5-mile warm-up hike to get ready. We kicked off the day early, ready to take on a new challenge. Thankfully the trail started off flat, but it didn’t take long before we found ourselves facing the first challenge: a steep climb that felt like it went on forever. It was tough, but reaching the top was so worth it. We were greeted with a beautiful overlook of a big, peaceful body of water with a bridge in the distance.
After a short break we kept going, and soon enough we hit the second peak. This one was even steeper, but by then we had adjusted to the height of the hill. One of the best parts of this hike was that we got to practice navigation. Our ASMs showed us how to use compasses and topographic maps to follow the trail and mark our progress. A few scouts even led parts of the hike, pointing out trail markers and using landmarks to stay on course. It was a great hands-on way to build confidence with our navigation skills!
By the time we made it back to the trailhead, we were feeling a lot more prepared for our Hiking Merit Badge!
