Environmental Issues affecting our community: Climate Change

Climate change is the increase of temperatures, globally, over a long period of time. Climate change is mostly caused by greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases are gases produced by both humans and natural resources. The gases rise up creating a layer around Earth's atmosphere. This layer traps heat keeping it from escaping into space. The layer absorbs some of the waves but also reflects some back to Earth, causing it to heat up. So how does climate change affect us?

Climate change causes things such as droughts, fires, and diseases (such as malaria). It also causes our ice caps to melt which will result in an increase in sea levels (floods) and the loss of animal populations that live or depend on the ice caps for survival.

We can prevent climate change by

Saving energy: energy is powered by coal, oil, and gas which release greenhouse gases,

Reducing food waste: rotting food produces methane, a greenhouse gas

Switching to renewable sources of energy such as wind or solar energy
