On November 6th and 13th, our troop participated in the annual Scouting for Food drive around Chadbourne Elementary. We first distributed door hangers in the neighborhood, and the week after, we picked up bags of food that were left out. Thanks to all the hard work from the scouts, we were able to collect and donate many food items to a local church to distribute at local food banks.
On November 6th, our troop distributed door hangers for the houses in our assigned area. The scouts of our troop had to cover a total of about 1,200 houses. We first gathered into our patrols and were each given a map. Scouts figured out together how to split into groups of 2-3 and efficiently cover the large neighborhoods. This was also a great outing to put our navigation skills to the test, as we had to figure out together which streets to travel to and how to get there. In the end, we were all able to spend a great time with each other throughout the outing, and we successfully distributed door hangers to all the houses!
On the thirteenth, we collected food items that were left outside houses in the neighborhoods. Scouts split into groups from their patrols again and decided which streets they would each tackle. After we collected all the bags of food, our troop met again in Chadbourne Elementary. All the scouts helped sort through what could be donated and what could not. We separated glass and fragile items to prevent them from breaking and checked to see if any packaged food was already opened. At the end of this outing, our troop contributed to thousands of packages of food being donated!
From this outing, scouts learned and improved valuable skills. We worked together to efficiently plan how to cover neighborhoods as patrols and used many teamwork strategies. This was a very important community service, and we’re happy to have helped so many people!
