How to Write a Blog Post! (A Guide)

Updated: Apr 7, 2023

Say you want to share something amazing with your fellow scouts. Whether it's a new game you love to play, or an important issue you want to raise awareness about, Troop 123's website gives you a platform to share anything you desire!

However, we know this can be a bit confusing, and there are some specifics you need to keep in mind. So, feel free to use this blog post as a guide to write your own!

1. Pick a topic

If you've already picked out your topic, feel free to skip this step. But if you're struggling, consider this: what are you passionate about? Is there anything you want to share with the world? If you still can't think of a topic, here are some you can choose from.

  • History of (upcoming holiday, etc)

  • A review of a recent album

  • A recent issue that has arisen in the media (eg: BLM)

  • A review of a recent tech release (eg: the new apple iphone)

  • Review of a recent movie

  • Politics

    • A specific political candidate

    • A bill in congress

    • A recent law passed

  • An debate/opinion article about anything from candy to a political issue

  • A book review

1. Create a draft

Once you've landed on the perfect topic to write about, you're going to want to start writing. To create a draft, click on your user profile, found in the top right corner of the website. Once you've landed on your profile, click my drafts.

To create a new blog post, click the button called, 'Create a Post', found next to the title, at the top right corner.

2. Be creative!

You've created a draft! You now have free reign over what to do with your blog post. You can add pictures, galleries, videos, gifs, and code snippets! We do recommend adding a picture after your title, because the picture is part of the preview. But besides that, have fun!

3. Settings

Because we don't want your blog post getting mixed up with the outing entries, there are some settings you need to tweak.

At the top of the post editor, you'll see a button that says, 'Blog Settings.' Feel free to change up the cover picture, write an excerpt, or add in SEO. Though, we do ask you stay away from featuring your post unless given permission to.

In the settings, you will see a tab called, 'Categories.' You can choose any sub-categories you like, but make sure you categorize your post under blog. This will make sure your post doesn't show up under outing entries, and shows up under the blog section.

4. Review Because this is a public website, there are a few guidelines you need to keep in mind before publishing your article.

  • Never publish future event dates/time

  • No individual pictures

  • No personal details - address/school/hang out places

  • Keep in mind the consent of other troop members, be sensitive

Congratulations! You've created a blog post, and shared your writing with the world!
