Here is the explanation of what a merit badge is from the Scout Book : “Scouting offers more than 135 merit badges, each of which provides an introduction to a different topic.”. But to put it in a more deep way, it’s the beginning of the path to a new passion, or a hobby, or maybe even a career! It’s the chance to explore something new about yourself! Since merit badges are important in Scouting and useful during adolescence, I thought I’d help you in your decision of which merit badges to take next year at summer camp! And I’ll do that by writing this article as a preview of a merit badge I took, enjoyed, and recommend : First Aid.
The First Aid merit badge is Eagle-required, the prerequisite to the Emergency Preparedness merit badge, and genuinely useful and sensible in case of medical emergencies. Earning it was surprisingly enjoyable because of the relatable content, and the 'what if's and 'why's.
In this merit badge you will :
Learn about receiving medical help at home, a remote location, on the water.
Understand triage.
Learn about the difference between a sign and a symptom.
Learn about CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation). Understand when you may perform it. Learn about an AED (Automated External Defibrillator).
Learn how to treat large open wounds/cuts which are bleeding severely. Know if and when you should use a tourniquet.
Learn the difference between and how to treat open and closed fractures.
Learn how to treat suspected injuries to the head, neck, and back.
Understand in what situations should an injured person be moved. And which method of carrying them (fireman rescue, drag, etc...) should be used.
Learn the prevention, symptoms, and first aid to :
→ Bee/Hornet/Wasp stings
→ Anaphylactic Shock
→ Bruises
→ Sprains/Strains
→ Hypothermia
→ Frostbite
→ Burns (1st, 2nd, 3rd Degree)
→ Seizures
→ Dehydration
→ Muscle Cramps
→ Heat Exhaustion
→ Heat Stroke
→ Abdominal pain
→ Broken, Chipped, or Loosened Tooth
Teach your counselor/another Scout the proper first aid you learned in this merit badge for any wound.

So if you’re interested in this preview, finish the prerequisites, and try out the First Aid merit badge!
Hope this helps,
Sabya Challa
